Ontario Provincial Police officers report that a 31-year-old resident of Mississauga has lost their life after a canoe capsized on a lake in Georgian Bay Township on Saturday evening.
The OPP stated that the incident took place just after 8 p. m. on Stewart Lake, about 40 feet from the shore.
According to the statement, there were two individuals in the canoe when it overturned. Officers mentioned that one person was rescued by a passing boater, while the other went underwater and did not resurface.
Investigators found the missing person with help from members of the OPP underwater search and recovery unit on Sunday.
Authorities said they are still looking into the circumstances of this incident alongside the Ontario coroner’s office and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
“The OPP reminds all boaters and paddlers to make water safety a priority by wearing a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device, checking weather conditions before heading out, and ensuring all required safety equipment is readily available,” the statement said.
