Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a homicide suspect was hurt while being arrested by Niagara Regional Police on Friday.
The police service said Saturday that just before noon the day prior, uniformed officers went to an address on Lakeshore Road in St. Catharines after getting a report about an assault.
Officers discovered a man with serious injuries who was quickly taken to a local hospital but unfortunately died from his injuries, police stated.
Authorities have not released the victim’s name or age.
The suspect, a 34-year-old man from St. Catharines, was located at a nearby residence and was apprehended by the service’s emergency task unit, according to police. During the arrest process, the suspect sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital.
The SIU was informed and activated its mandate to conduct an investigation, police mentioned.
The SIU is a civilian agency that looks into incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or claims of sexual assault.
The suspect faces charges for second-degree murder.
