A police inquiry in St. Thomas, which started due to a reported dog attack and a vehicle crash, has resulted in drug trafficking and weapons charges against two locals.
According to the police, officers responded to Sunset Drive near Wilson Avenue shortly after 6:30 p. m. on July 7 after receiving reports that a dog was attacking two individuals. When they arrived, officers discovered a Dodge Caravan that had collided with the front of a business.
The two injured individuals were reportedly attacked by the dog before trying to get into the van for medical assistance, stated Samantha Wakefield, corporate communications coordinator with the St. Thomas Police Service.
“As a result of the dog attack.. the two individuals that sustained the injuries and were in the van involved in the collision with the front of the business were attempting to seek medical attention for their injuries,” she said.
Later on, police say investigators looked over surveillance footage and found suspected methamphetamine while processing the vehicle. After securing a search warrant, officers confiscated 32.3 grams of methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of crack cocaine, brass knuckles, and a digital scale. The estimated street value of these drugs is $2,700.
A 44-year-old man from St. Thomas and a 39-year-old woman from St. Thomas are both facing charges related to drug trafficking and weapons possession. The man is also charged with assault using a weapon and making threats; he remains in custody, while the woman has been released pending her court date.
The police have not revealed either suspect’s identity as doing so could expose the victims involved in this assault investigation.
