It’s safe to say it was a very rainy weekend in parts of Ontario.

Several thunderstorms moved along a stationary front across southern Ontario on Saturday and Sunday, bringing downpour amounts that were especially high in the Niagara area.

Grimsby, Ont., recorded nearly 105 mm of rain, which resulted in localized flooding in various spots.

CANADA’S AUGUST OUTLOOK: A significant mid-month flip-flop in the works

The last two weeks saw rainfall totals that varied widely across the province, showing big differences over short distances.

Due to the recent heavy rains and flooding, with a total of 257.7 mm accumulated over the past week, the City of St. Catharines, Ont., declared a state of emergency on Monday.

This declaration comes after flooding caused extensive damage to homes and properties during the past week.

Rainfall amounts from this weekend

Hamilton airport: 65.1 mm

Welland: 80.8 mm

Grimsby: 104.8 mm

Bancroft: 108 mm

The higher totals were quite localized along the Niagara Peninsula, stretching from Oshawa to Cobourg, with narrowly heavy amounts extending towards Ottawa.

Apart from the rain, this system also generated severe storms that briefly led to a tornado warning for the Niagara region. There was even a report of a possible tornado in Kemptville, Ont., where minor tree damage was noted.
