Authorities are investigating whether Iranian hackers were responsible for a recent cyberattack targeting water systems across seven states, including Minnesota. If confirmed, this would not be the first instance of Iranian involvement in cyberattacks aimed at the U. S.

For over ten years, hackers linked to Iran have consistently targeted accessible American entities. They look for common vulnerabilities to cause disruption, instill fear, draw attention, and erode confidence in the U. S. government.

However, it often takes weeks or even months to receive official confirmation as investigators gather technical evidence. Authorities are also exploring if the attackers tried to present themselves as based in Iran to provoke tensions during ongoing conflicts with the country.

Iran has consistently denied any role in cyberattacks.

Below is a list of notable Iranian-linked cyber incidents that have impacted the U. S.:

2011-2013: Attacks on U. S. Banks

Seven individuals associated with firms tied to the Iranian government and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps faced charges nearly a decade ago for conducting distributed denial-of-service (DDo S) attacks against 46 financial institutions from 2011 to 2013.

The Justice Department reported that these attacks rendered bank websites inaccessible, preventing customers from accessing their online accounts. In total, these incidents resulted in tens of millions of dollars in remediation costs for both banks and their customers.

2013: The New York Dam Incident

A separate indictment concerning attacks on banks included charges against one hacker who accessed control systems at Bowman Avenue Dam located in Rye, New York. Although this individual could view operational data, the sluice gate used for managing water levels was disconnected for maintenance during that time.

2014: Las Vegas Sands Casino Breach
