Simone De Silva, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and valued member of her community, passed away peacefully at TBRHSC on July 25, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born on February 4, 1945, in Espanola, Ontario, Simone’s life was filled with love, kindness, and creativity. As one of eleven siblings, family always played a central role in her life.
Simone was preceded in death by her dear husband, Wilfred De Silva. They met and married in Sault Ste. Marie before making their home in Thunder Bay. Together they warmly fostered children who needed care until welcoming their daughter, Carolyn.
Before running her corner store, Simone worked in retail. She took immense pride in owning Simone’s Variety in County Park. It wasn’t just a shop; it was a gathering place where people felt at home and enjoyed friendly conversations. Her keen eye for presentation and creative displays made it a beloved spot in the neighborhood.
Creativity flowed through every aspect of Simone’s life. She had a talent for decorating her home and gardens with seasonal touches that created inviting spaces for family and friends to enjoy. Crafting was another passion of hers; she especially loved making handmade decorations and greeting cards that showcased her imagination and unique style. She also enjoyed lighter activities like bingo-where she often found luck-and visiting slot machines for some fun.
The love that Simone shared with her family was truly special. She’s fondly remembered by her devoted daughter, Carolyn Roberts, along with son-in-law Paul; their unwavering support brought comfort to her life. She is also survived by her treasured grandson Matthew (Kirsten) and beloved granddaughter Katherine (Nick), both of whom filled her days with joy and laughter.
Cremation has taken place followed by a private family service. To celebrate her appreciation for flowers and beautiful spaces, the family plans to create a memorial garden in honor of Simone-a lasting tribute where her warmth and creativity can continue to thrive for years ahead.
