THUNDER BAY, Ontario, Canada – A standout pitching display from starter Cole Mc Combs and reliever Devin Costa led the Duluth Huskies to a narrow 1-0 win against the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Thursday night.
Brayden Smith scored the only run of the game in the top of the ninth, racing home on a delayed double steal after getting hit by a 3-2 pitch with one out. He moved to second on a Kayden Campbell single and then stole third base.
The pitchers took care of business, with Mc Combs giving up five hits and one walk over six innings while striking out seven batters. Costa allowed just one hit during his three innings of work.
The closest Thunder Bay got to scoring was likely in the bottom of the fourth when Alex Kean started with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on another single. However, Kean was caught trying to steal home, and the Border Cats flew out to end that inning. An error at the start of the fifth gave Thunder Bay another chance with a runner on third and one out, but an infield pop-up followed by a fly ball killed that opportunity.
Costa kept things rolling smoothly, allowing a single to the second batter he faced before retiring eight consecutive Border Cats.
Duluth (11-15 second half) recorded four hits, two coming from catcher Isaiah Ibarra.
The Huskies will face off against the Border Cats again in Thunder Bay on Friday. The Huskies can clinch the Superior Cup as they look to win the season series between these teams.
Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
