Bangor, Maine (CNN) – On Saturday, Maine Democrats selected Troy Jackson as their new Senate candidate. This decision came at a rather brief and unconventional convention, setting up a 101-day race aimed at unseating Republican Sen. Susan Collins in one of the nation’s key Senate battles.

In a near-unanimous vote, 566 delegates gathered in Bangor chose Jackson, who previously served as the state Senate president, to take over for Graham Platner after his withdrawal earlier this month following a rape allegation. Jackson faced minimal resistance during the convention due to his support base filling most delegate spots at county meetings and pushing his main opponents to step aside.

After his decisive nomination, Jackson walked onto the stage amid enthusiastic cheers and the upbeat sounds of “Northern Attitude” by Noah Kahan from nearby Vermont. In his acceptance speech, he focused on a dual challenge: bringing together Democrats and taking down Collins.

“There is a place in this campaign for all of you. There is work for you in this movement. And I will spend every day now through November earning that trust because today we turn the page,” Jackson stated. “Today, this becomes a general election campaign and today we begin the work of defeating Susan Collins in November.”

Democratic leaders from Washington quickly expressed their support for Jackson after remaining neutral during the nominating process due to previous tensions with Platner. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who leads the Senate Democratic campaign committee, sent aides to observe the proceedings and noted in a statement that Jackson “has harnessed the grassroots energy in Maine and is well-positioned to defeat” Collins.

However, Jackson mentioned that he doesn’t plan on supporting Schumer as Democratic leader. “I just think that we need new ideas, new people coming out,” he remarked in an interview.

On the other hand, Republicans made it clear they intend to link Jackson to Platner, who exited his campaign amid denied allegations of rape. While Jackson had urged Platner to withdraw from the race before stepping down himself, he had also previously aligned closely with him.

“They are scared. They’re afraid their rubber stamp in the US Senate is going to lose,” Jackson told CNN after seeing one of the first attack ads against him. “I expect there to be more of that but it’s totally false.”

Jackson presented himself on Saturday as a progressive champion for working-class folks who could argue that Collins hasn’t stood up enough against President Donald Trump on behalf of Mainers. But he’s got tough competition ahead against an incumbent who’s proven her political resilience time and again.

Collins chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee and enjoys significant fundraising advantages. Her ads have been running frequently for months now-giving her quite a head start as they both head into these final three months leading up to November.

At a fundraising event Friday night in Falmouth, Collins indicated she is taking this race seriously by admitting privately that it might be her toughest campaign yet due to challenging political conditions facing Republicans.

Her campaign described Jackson’s nomination as “an appointment” made by just a small group of Democratic voters while pointing out his unsuccessful run for governor earlier this year.

“Our campaign will continue to run on Senator Collins’ bipartisan record of delivering results for Maine and America which will stand in stark contrast to Troy’s low-energy campaign and his partisan record of driving up costs hurting our schools and making life less affordable for families across the state,” said campaign spokesperson Shawn Roderick in a statement. “Just one month ago Troy came in third in the Democratic primary for Governor; now he’ll run for Senate as third choice among party insiders.”

Charles Dingman, chairperson of the Maine Democratic Party urged party activists saying they should “buckle down for next 100 days together.”

“Please carry with you fantastic energy from this room along with creativity that brought us all here together,” he said while delegates applauded waving signs reading “Retire Susan” overhead-a clear reference highlighting what’s at stake: turning this race into a referendum about Collins.

Jackson’s Vision

The organizers envisioned many candidates competing fiercely among themselves seeking majority among 601 total delegates (500 elected locally plus 101 representing state committee). Instead when convention started only one challenger remained: Saundra Pelletier-CEO within biopharmaceutical sector but politically unknown figure overall.

Because of these developments; Saturday’s nominations played out without much excitement or drama which has surrounded recent events involving Platner’s scandal affecting Maine Democrats lately since anticipation surrounding it felt heavy before arriving there altogether too soon once everything concluded shortly past noon after just under three hours elapsed since beginning gathering initially began!
