The westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 have reopened Friday morning after a tragic accident involving two transport trucks.
The incident took place just before 6 p. m. Thursday, not far from the Veterans Memorial Parkway interchange.
According to police, one driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where they were later pronounced dead. The name of the deceased has not been made public.
The other vehicle’s driver and passenger did not sustain any injuries.
The department’s hazmat unit and representatives from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks were called to assist after approximately 200 litres of diesel fuel leaked due to the crash, fire officials noted.

A request for comment from a ministry spokesperson was not returned before publication.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Ontario Provincial Police.
