As of Saturday morning, there were 191 active wildfires across northern Ontario, with seven new fires reported in the northwestern region on Saturday afternoon, according to provincial officials.

These seven additional fires bring the total for the region to 132, as stated by the provincial Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) agency.

AFFES noted that overcast skies following overnight rain on Friday helped slow down fire growth and activity among all active fires.

The recent wildfires in the northwestern area cover approximately 252 hectares and include:

Nipigon 67 (NIP067) was identified Thursday evening, situated about seven kilometres west of Crib Extension Road and southeast of Cavell Lake. This five-hectare fire remains uncontrolled. Nipigon 68 (NIP068) was confirmed Thursday evening north of Percy Lake. The fire covers 0.7 hectares and is not under control. Kenora 19 (KEN019) is located on an island in Black Sturgeon Lakes, east of Peterson Road. This fire has been called out at 0.1 hectares. Fort Frances 40 (FOR040) is near Rocky Island Road and Hopkins Bay Islet Road. The fire was called out at a size of 0.1 hectares. Fort Frances 41 (FOR041) is positioned north of Secret Lake close to Sedgwick Lake Road. This fire covers 0.1 hectares and is currently under control. Sioux Lookout 98 (SLK098) lies near the northern edge of Michikenis Lake, covering an area of 110 hectares that is being monitored. Sioux Lookout 99 (SLK099) is about four-and-a-half kilometres north of Wharram Lake and spans approximately 136.6 hectares; it too is being monitored. The Ontario wildfires: How the first few days unfolded

Fire crews are engaged in efforts to contain destructive wildfires that have devastated communities and forced thousands to evacuate in southwestern Ontario. Here’s a summary of how things unfolded during the initial days.

AFFES also confirmed two new fires in northeastern Ontario on Friday:

North Bay 34 covers an area of 0.1 hectares on a small island at the northern bay of Sand Lake, roughly nine kilometres northeast of Restoule Provincial Park. This fire will be observed for its natural benefits since it’s safely distanced from communities and infrastructure. Sudbury 28 measures at just 0.1 hectares and is located near Eatlots Lake, which sits west of Lake Wanapitei; one crew is responding to this incident.

On Friday morning, an evacuation order was issued by the province for areas surrounding Fort Frances’ Fire No.14 which exceeds slightly more than 55,000 hectares and remains uncontrolled as of Saturday morning.

Residents around Baril, Bedivere, Windigoostigwan lakes, and Lac des Mille Lacs have been instructed to evacuate immediately unless they possess a travel permit from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNRF).

AFFES has deployed incident management teams to oversee operations within Fort Frances and Thunder Bay sectors due to these large-scale incidents specifically regarding Fort Frances Fires No.14, No.15, along with Thunder Bay Fire No.36.

During a press conference held in Thunder Bay on Saturday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated that over155 firefighting crews were actively working on-site as well as more than80 aircraft involved in operations.

“Our focus continues to be sending resources to areas where suppression efforts can be most effective while ensuring community safety,” he remarked.

Ford also mentioned that an additional40 aircraft are ready for support if needed but cautioned those affected by wildfires against returning home or going back to their campsites if ordered evacuated.

“We will find you accommodations like hotel rooms along with food provisions so you’re taken care of,” Ford assured people.”When water bombers fly overhead they won’t release water if they see anyone who shouldn’t be there; therefore it’s crucial you leave those areas.”

AFFES reported that firefighters from Alberta Wildfire have joined forces with local crews assisting ongoing ground efforts for suppression activities. As well-ground teams will keep receiving support through all available resources such as heavy equipment helicopters aerial personnel including those dispatched from both Alberta Yukon regions.

Ford mentioned having communicated recently with Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey who offered additional personnel assistance.
