A prolonged severe weather situation is currently taking place across Ontario and Quebec. A heat dome positioned to the south is creating a “ring of fire” pattern, raising the chances of heavy rain, strong winds, large hail, and even tornadoes in certain areas.

This ongoing heat dome over Ontario is pushing temperatures into the 30s, with humidex values hitting the 40s in northern parts on Monday and Tuesday. The extreme heat is intensifying fire conditions in northwestern Ontario, where more than 100 wildfires are still active.

<p Severe thunderstorms fueled by this heat dome’s outer edge-a phenomenon often called the "ring of fire"-started developing on Monday and are expected to continue through the night and into Tuesday. Some storms before dawn on Tuesday could become severe.

People living in both Ontario and Quebec should keep an eye on alerts and be ready for possible severe weather effects including damaging winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes.

Tuesday: Risk of Severe Thunderstorms for Ottawa Region, St. Lawrence, and Southern Quebec

High-impact weather is expected to last into Tuesday afternoon, with eastern Ontario, the St. Lawrence region, and southern Quebec-including Ottawa and Montreal-facing risks from severe thunderstorms.

A frontal boundary is predicted to spark widespread storm development north of the St. Lawrence River as well as in the National Capital Region. These storms are likely to move into the Eastern Townships and parts of eastern Ontario by evening.

Main threats include large hail, intense downpouring rains, and wind gusts exceeding 110 km/h. Meteorologists are also closely monitoring conditions that could lead to a few tornadoes forming within these evening storms due to significant atmospheric spin.

Stay informed with current weather alerts and forecasts as conditions change throughout the day ahead.
