A recent outbreak of the food-borne cyclospora parasite in the U. S., which leads to “explosive diarrhea,” is raising alarms.
Although no cases are being looked into in Canada and there’s no confirmed source for this outbreak, summer is still the prime time for such infections.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) states that cyclospora isn’t typically found on food or in drinking water in Canada, but cases usually spike during spring and summer due to fresh fruits and vegetables imported from other countries.
Health officials recommend continuing to wash your fruits and vegetables. However, Keith Warriner, a food safety expert at the University of Guelph, points out that washing produce may not completely eliminate some pathogens and parasites.
Why washing produce ‘doesn’t cut it’
Warriner explains that cyclospora is like many microbes; washing has its limits when it comes to eliminating it.
This parasite has a tough, sticky outer shell that makes it hard to remove from produce.
“Sticking to the surface is one aspect but (it) also can be entrapped in crevices and stomata,” he noted.
How can we get rid of Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts?
“Washing doesn’t cut it but we are working on a method based on hydroxyl-radicals to inactivate parasites like viruses and protozoa,” Warriner said.
The Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts, which are tiny spore-like forms of the cyclospora parasite, are resistant to sanitizers such as bleach. The best way to prevent them is by ensuring irrigation water isn’t contaminated with human waste.
If you’re very concerned, Warriner suggests freezing fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
Cooking can also lower your risk.
Historically, Warriner mentioned that cyclospora was mainly associated with travel-related infections.
Over time, it has become more common here too, especially in southern United States regions but not so much in Canada.
Warriner cautions that while it’s not common in Canada itself, where you buy your products from matters greatly.
“We should worry as we import most of our fresh produce into Canada from South and Central America where the parasite is endemic,” he stated.

Warriner clarifies that it’s not frequently seen here; instances that do arise are generally linked with travel or outbreaks tied to imported fresh goods.
He estimates there’s an outbreak every couple of years but thinks this could rise due to growing populations of cyclospora across North America.
“Previous outbreaks have been linked to basil, cilantro, raspberries and lettuce,” he noted.
According to Warriner , numbers might be underreported as new diagnostic methods for identifying infectious cyclospora have only recently come about.
