Investigators have determined that the OPP did nothing wrong during the arrest of a 39-year-old man last November.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared Ontario Provincial Police officers involved in an arrest in Amherstview that resulted in injuries to a 39-year-old man last year.
In a report made public on Friday, SIU Director Joseph Martino stated there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officers had committed any criminal offense during the arrest on November 12, 2025.
Lennox and Addington County OPP responded to calls about an unwanted and intoxicated individual causing a disturbance shortly after 8 p. m. Family members had reportedly reached out to law enforcement after the man, who had recently separated from his partner, attempted to stay at their residence.
According to the SIU, officers found the man at Dinosaur Park and tried to detain him for public intoxication. The report mentioned that he resisted arrest, which led to a struggle on the ground.
The SIU noted that one officer hit the man several times before they managed to secure him with handcuffs.
A few days later, the man went to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken nose and possibly a fractured hyoid bone.
Martino concluded that the officers acted within their rights when arresting the man and that the force used during their encounter was appropriate.
