Ontario Provincial Police are looking into the situation after an elderly woman was found dead on the grounds of a Tillsonburg elementary school following a night where temperatures dropped to -23 C.
An employee discovered the woman without vital signs at 6:45 a. m. Friday outside Maple Leaf Public School.
She was quickly taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police have stated that foul play has been ruled out, but OPP Const. Stacey Culbert mentioned that investigators are considering whether the woman may have frozen to death due to Thursday night’s severe cold temperatures.
“We’ve certainly had a cold spell here last night, but yeah, they’ll be looking into that as well as other things,” Culbert said.
Culbert did not specify if the woman was adequately dressed for the extreme cold experienced in Tillsonburg overnight.
“At this time I am unable to say that,” Culbert said.
However, with this recent cold snap, Culbert emphasized that the OPP is reminding everyone to check on vulnerable individuals like the elderly and young children.
A three-year-old boy from Toronto, Elijah Marsh, died in hospital on Thursday after being outside for several hours in the bitter cold when he wandered away from his family’s apartment around 4 a. m., dressed only in a T-shirt, diaper, and boots.
The OPP will not disclose the woman’s identity until her next-of-kin have been informed.
