The Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) reports that nearly 1,400 nurses have lost their jobs at healthcare facilities throughout the province since the start of this year.
There’s no information yet on whether any nurses have been let go in northwestern Ontario.
The ONA attributes these layoffs to insufficient funding from the provincial government.
“The Ford government is intentionally underfunding our public health-care system in its quest to justify more privatization, and in response, employers are cutting RNs and front-line care, instead of redirecting their profits or executive bonuses,” states Ariss.
President Erin Ariss warns that this lack of funding and staffing will severely affect residents trying to access care.
“Cutting RNs and front-line care makes it harder for communities to access care and hurts the safety of hospital patients, long-term care residents and workers alike,” states Ariss in a release.
“We should be increasing RN care through safe staffing ratios, not gutting an already decimated nursing workforce.”
Ariss highlights that Ontario still has the lowest number of RNs per capita in Canada.
