We are heartbroken to share the news of Kauno Samuel Ketola’s passing on June 8, 2026, at the age of 94. He left us peacefully with his family by his side. Kauno was born in Kurikka, Finland, on June 25, 1931. There he met Hanna, the love of his life, and they married on April Fool’s Day in 1956. They spent a beautiful 60 years together until her passing.
After moving to Canada, Kauno became a carpenter and worked on many projects big and small throughout his career. He dedicated countless evenings and weekends helping others as well. Over the years, he built and renovated numerous homes for himself and his family. In retirement, he enjoyed creating saunas everywhere; one even for then-Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.
Kauno was an active member of the Finlandia Club and served on its board for many years. He also sang with the Otava Finnish Male Choir and loved bowling. Fishing was another hobby of his, although he didn’t enjoy eating what he caught.
He was predeceased by his parents and siblings back in Finland, as well as his wife Hanna and son-in-law Jukka Sikio. He is survived by his daughter Heli, son Kari, granddaughter Jaana (Levi), along with great-grandchildren Wren and Miles.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Dr. Skunta along with all the nurses and PSWs at TCU in Hogarth for their kindness during Kauno’s final days.
Cremation has occurred, and a private ceremony will take place at a later time.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
