Ottawa police are looking into a suspected murder-suicide after two young boys were discovered dead in a home in south Ottawa on Monday, while their father was found deceased hours earlier in a vehicle fire in eastern Ontario.

Authorities reported that officers were dispatched to a residence on Mandevilla Crescent around 10 a. m. following a request for a wellness check from a third party.

Police discovered two boys, aged seven and 12, dead.

The Ottawa Police Service homicide unit is taking charge of the investigation. Officials stated that notifications to next of kin are currently being made and the identities of the children won’t be released.

Police indicated that the investigation is intricate and involves multiple locations across eastern Ontario.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are providing assistance by securing two sites believed to be linked to this case: a business fire in Iroquois, Ont., earlier Monday, and a vehicle fire reported shortly after 5:30 a. m. at the Kemptville carpool lot near Highway 416 and Rideau River Road.

Investigators revealed that an adult male’s body was found inside the burned vehicle. Police have identified him as the father of the children.

Dunlop spoke with reporters Monday afternoon and stated that investigators think the boys were siblings.

“From the trauma and evidence I can clearly say it was a double homicide,” Dunlop said. “We believe it was a double homicide-suicide.”

Police mentioned they are treating these deaths as part of an apparent murder-suicide and examining how both investigations connect between Ottawa and eastern Ontario.
Dunlop noted that investigators believe the boys were found at what was their father’s home. He also indicated that authorities suspect their father died by suicide but they’re collaborating with OPP to piece together the timeline of events.
“The death of the deceased will give us the big picture,” he said.

As part of their ongoing investigation, police will interview the children’s mother and other family members. Dunlop mentioned there are additional children in the family who weren’t involved.
“Obviously it’s a tragic incident for the family, friends and neighbours,” Dunlop said. “When children are involved, it’s extra difficult to understand.”

No indications suggest any continuing threat to public safety at this time.

If anyone has information regarding this case, they should reach out to the Ottawa Police Service homicide unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
