It’s been a while since we’ve had any snowfall in southern Ontario, but there’s still quite a bit left in Barrie, Ont.

As residents of Ontario try to beat the recent heat wave, a post from the City of Barrie shared a picture of an enormous snow pile that’s still around. This snow was collected from all over the city during winter and stored at Barrie’s Operations Centre.

Not only has this snow remained for months, but it also handled the heat wave surprisingly well. According to a post on June 30 from the City of Barrie Facebook page, it’s still standing tall and proud.

This past winter, Barrie received between 400 to 500 centimetres of snow.

The city reported that over 9,000 dump-truck loads-about 180,000 cubic metres-were removed and taken to various storage sites during the 2025-26 winter as noted in the photo caption.

Snow pile still about 18 feet high

Even with several days hitting temperatures near or above 30 degrees Celsius in Barrie, this snow pile is holding steady at roughly 18 feet tall and about 100 feet wide, as reported by on July 3.

The report mentioned that this massive snow pile reached nearly seven storeys high and could be seen from Highway 400.

How does the snow last through summer?

Dave Friary, who oversees operations in Barrie, explained to that they managed this year’s snow differently which helped keep it around until July so far.

“We actually brought in a bulldozer to compact it similar to what we do at the landfill,” said Friary in an interview with . “So make everything a lot more dense; so that’s one of the reasons why it’s hanging around so long.”

Barrie , Ont., snow melter as of July

It ‘s worth mentioning that it’s been over days since saw temperatures drop below freezing , yet , remains significantly high.

To highlight this statistic , city officials have recorded nine days with temperatures exceeding degrees.

” And we’re still holding onto that snow ,” said Kevin Mac Kay , a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

While melting continues among the remaining debris at Ferndale Drive’s works yard , there’s no exact timeline for when this pile will completely disappear. However , city officials believe it should be gone before August long weekend.
