Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is reminding everyone to stay safe as a heat wave impacts much of southern Ontario this week.
Environment Canada has moved a previously issued yellow level heat warning up to orange for a large part of the area, with daytime temperatures reaching the 30s throughout the week and humidex values climbing into the 40s.
The heat wave is expected to continue until Friday, July 3. HPPH points out that while extreme heat can impact anyone’s health, certain groups are at higher risk:
-older adults
-infants and young children
-people with ongoing health issues, like breathing problems, heart conditions, or mental health concerns
-people working outdoors in high temperatures
-individuals exercising in the heat
-those without homes
-low-income individuals (who may not have access to cooler environments)
Make sure you’re drinking enough cool liquids, plan outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day, and wear light, loose clothing.
Signs of heat stroke include:
-Headache
-Nausea or vomiting
-Dizziness or fainting
-Rapid breathing and heartbeat
-Extreme thirst
-Less urination with dark yellow urine </pp
-Changes in behaviour in children (e. g. sleepiness)</pp
If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move them to a cooler location while applying cold water to their skin.
