KITCHENER, ONT. – The Ontario government has finalized an agreement with CN Rail to acquire land for dedicated GO train tracks along the Kitchener line.
This deal comes just in time for the additional GO train services scheduled to start in November and represents a key move towards establishing two-way, all-day rapid transit on the Kitchener line as part of the Kitchener Extension Project.
The province plans to buy 20.9 kilometres of land within the Halton subdivision and will create infrastructure between Bramalea and Kitchener, which will improve service between Kitchener and Union Station.
The entire extension project is set to add 40 kilometres of new, two-way track and involves track re-alignments, signal upgrades, bridge work, and platform expansion throughout the corridor, according to a release.
When it’s finished, the updated Kitchener line will offer:
To Bramalea GO:
Two-way, all-day service, seven days per week
To Mount Pleasant GO
30-minute two-way, all-day service, seven days per week More trains during peak rush hour times
To Kitchener GO
60-minute two-way, all-day service, seven days per week More trains during peak rush hour times
