Latest update 7:07 p. m.: The severe thunderstorm warning for Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton and nearby areas has been lifted.

People in southern Ontario are advised to watch the weather closely as conditions are right for severe thunderstorms that could bring damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain later today.

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch that affects a large part of the area, including major cities like Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton and surrounding communities.

Forecasters predict a line of strong thunderstorms moving in from Lake Huron is likely to sweep across southern Ontario late this afternoon into the early evening.

The biggest threats include wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h, hail the size of quarters and heavy rainfall that might surpass 30 mm in certain areas.

The storms could cause localized flooding along with fallen tree branches and power outages. Officials also warn that strong winds and hail can lead to injuries and property damage.

Environment Canada reminds everyone that if threatening weather is approaching, they should go indoors immediately and secure any loose outdoor items that could fly around in high winds.

“When thunder roars, go indoors” remains the key safety message since lightning continues to be one of the top causes of weather-related injuries and fatalities in Canada.

A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are right for dangerous thunderstorms to develop; however, not every area under the watch will necessarily experience severe weather.

Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather alerts and forecasts throughout the afternoon and evening as conditions change.
