This week’s lineup of events is a bit lighter than usual, likely because many local communities and groups are focused on their Canada Day celebrations! But there’s still plenty of excitement to enjoy after July 1, including a beer festival in Bells Corners, an art tour in the Glebe, comedy shows in Gatineau, a cycling event in Killaloe, a Celtic celebration in Almonte, two night markets, three theatrical performances, and free yoga sessions. Have fun at a free festival in Rockland

The Clarence-Rockland Festival (June 23 to July 4) has lots of free activities lined up. The schedule includes stand-up comedy, a kids’ area and plenty of live music.

Experience Japanese culture in Sandy Hill

Natsu Matsuri is an annual event celebrating everything Japanese. It takes place at the Sandy Hill Community Centre and the nearby Annie Pootoogook Park on Saturday, July 4. You can enjoy live performances throughout the day while learning about ikebana and aikido, tasting ramen and other Japanese snacks, admiring kimono and yukata attire, shopping for Japanese goods, and much more.

Embrace your Celtic side in Almonte

Almonte Celtfest (July 3 to 5) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Head over to Gemmill Park for an exciting lineup of live Celtic music along with food options, Gaelic sports events, Celtic College workshops, an artisan market and more fun activities.

Enjoy some drinks in Bells Corners

On Saturday, July 4, Ottawa on Tap Beerfest gives you the chance to sample beverages from 11 local craft breweries. There will also be live music entertainment, line dancing sessions, karaoke contests, soccer screenings (don’t miss the Canada-Morocco match!), games for all ages and food offerings from Suzy Q Donuts, The Prep Kitchen , Rude Pizza , Athens Grill and Nona’s Deli Restaurant. Tickets cost $20 if purchased ahead of time or $25 at the gate (plus HST).

Rev up your engines in Smiths Falls

The second Downtown Smiths Falls Bike Night of this season is taking place on Wednesday, July 1. Plenty of motorcycle parking will be available so you can check out vendor stalls while visiting stores that will stay open late just for this event-enjoying live music along with delicious food trucks too!

Explore multiculturalism at Brewer Park

The African Canadian Association Ottawa is hosting a Multicultural Festival on Saturday, July 4 at Brewer Park located across Bronson Avenue from Carleton University in Old Ottawa South. Kicking off at noon, you’ll find live music featuring drumming and dancing as well as global cuisine offerings, a vendors’ market, and fun activities suitable for families. Guests are encouraged to wear their country’s soccer jersey or their “finest cultural attire.”

Take a walk or bike ride through Killaloe

During Tour de Beaver Tails® happening in Killaloe (Sunday July 5), choose between biking distances of either 50 km 63 km or 94 km or take it easy with a one-hour guided historical walk around town. Proceeds from this event benefit the Killaloe and Area Food Bank.

Try quillwork at Billings Estate

As I type this early Tuesday morning, a few spots remain open for an introductory workshop on quillwork set to take place among the gardens at Billings Estate located in Alta Vista on Saturday July 4. Participants will have guidance from Anishinaabe artist Christine Toulouse as they create birchbark keychains. They’ll learn how porcupine quills are prepared, dyeing techniques applied, and understand cultural significance associated with this traditional art form. The workshop comes complete with light refreshments alongside a guided tour around museum’s current special exhibition titled “Beyond the Brim: Tales Told Through the Hats We Wore.” Be sure advance registration!
