A few days after a successful game against Brooklin, the Peterborough Century 21 Lakers faced a tough defeat, losing 13-9 to the Oakville Rock at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre on Monday night.
<p Their record now stands at.500 with 5 wins and 5 losses, keeping them in third place while Oakville moves ahead by four points.
The silver lining: Holden Cattoni made his return to the team and scored a hat trick. Adam Jay also came back to bolster the defense after both missed about a month due to injuries from their first matchup in Oakville.
However, there was some bad news as well: Cattoni left the game after netting his third goal and didn’t come back. Nick Rose (with 35 saves) exited after the second period when Isiah Moran-Weekes collided with him during a diving attempt at the crease right before intermission. Deacan Knott (12 saves) took over in goal for the third period.
“Offensively, I know the guys struggled to get some rhythm after Holden went down. So you take 99 out of our lineup, he had three to start, that’s a tough gap to fill,” said defensive coach Bobby Keast. “I think Oakville played a complete 60 minutes and I don’t think we did. They made the most of their opportunities. They’re a very good team and they execute their game plan very well.”
Peterborough started strong with leads of 1-0 and then 3-2 but ended up trailing 5-3 by the end of the first period. They fell further behind as Oakville stretched their lead to 6-3 in the second until Cattoni scored his hat trick goal at 3:48, which sparked some momentum for Peterborough. Justin Sykes found net on a breakaway at 4:18, followed by Jordan Stouros scoring his first of the year at 6:34 that tied things up at 6-6. But scoring stalled thereafter, thanks in part to former Laker Landon Kells who was stellar in goal for Oakville, making an impressive total of 46 saves and effectively shutting down any second chances.
The Rock outscored Peterborough by a margin of 5-2 in that final period.
“At both ends of the floor they did a good job of containing or controlling ground balls,” said Keast. “I think we got better as the game went on in terms of defense but it’s not an easy game. Everyone has a good team. It’s not guaranteed win so you have to work hard if you want results.”
For Oakville, Josh Dawick, Sam Le Clair, and Carson Moyer each recorded hat tricks with contributions of four assists for Dawick, three for Le Clair, and two for Moyer.
