City of Mississauga seeks public input on urban design program review

The City of Mississauga is starting a thorough review of its Urban Design Program. Officials believe this will help update design standards, aid in housing development, and make sure future growth fits the city’s long-term planning goals.

This review is part of the city’s larger aim to build well-designed communities while making it easier to create new housing and enhance affordability. The city staff are asking for feedback from residents, developers, architects, planners, builders, and other industry players as they kick off this process.

The first phase includes an online consultation happening from June 22 to July 31. Participants can watch an informational video, fill out a survey, and send in comments or questions through the project website. This feedback will help pinpoint what residents and stakeholders value in urban design and where changes might be needed. More information can be found at mississauga. ca/urbandesign.

Mississauga’s Urban Design Program sets out the framework and guidelines that shape how buildings, streetscapes, parks, and public spaces are designed across the city. The review aims to see how the program can be enhanced to better meet current development needs and community expectations while supporting future growth.

The city notes that this initiative also responds to suggestions from the Mayor’s Housing Task Force and will work towards aligning urban design policies with the upcoming Mississauga Official Plan 2051.

“The review is an opportunity to ensure our urban design program continues to support high-quality development while meeting the needs of residents and industry,” the city stated.

This review could impact future design requirements and approval processes for those in the development sector.

Municipal officials have indicated their goal is to foster lively, appealing, and functional communities while lowering obstacles to housing construction. By refreshing urban design guidelines, they hope to provide clearer expectations for applicants while ensuring new projects fit seamlessly into existing neighborhoods.

This review comes as municipalities throughout Ontario face pressure to speed up housing delivery without sacrificing design quality or community character.

<p Projects like Applewood Towns-developed by Hickory Limited Partnership with architecture by KIRKOR Architects and Planners along with landscape architecture by MEP DESIGN INC.-showcase modern housing developments influenced by urban design principles.

<p Art pieces such as the Living Root Bridge in Meadowvale created by Bau & Ćos Studio highlight how urban design contributes to unique public spaces and community identity according to city officials.

<p Mississauga acknowledges outstanding achievements in built environments through its annual Urban Design Awards program which recognizes excellence in architecture, landscape architecture, and city-building efforts. Click the link to view the 2025 winning projects.
