UPDATE: 12:20 p. m.

Five young lives were lost and several others were hurt following a two-vehicle accident in rural Ontario.

The Ontario Provincial Police report that the victims ranged in age from four to twelve years old.

The incident took place around 7:30 p. m. on Friday evening, in Mapleton Township, located northwest of Kitchener, at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12.

Authorities state that a van carrying ten individuals collided with an SUV occupied by one person at the intersection. This resulted in serious, life-threatening injuries for passengers of both vehicles, along with the tragic loss of the children.

According to OPP Superintendent Dwight Thib, the deceased children were all part of the same family, as he shared with reporters at police headquarters in Fergus, Ont.

An infant and four adults, including the driver of the SUV, were taken to hospitals with severe injuries.

Thib expressed gratitude towards the “Good Samaritans” who assisted first responders on-site, noting that victims received “immediate care” right after the crash.

At least three people required airlifting to various trauma centers while others were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
