A week after a deadly accident on Highway 401 close to Ayr, another serious incident occurred in the same area, leading to a lengthy closure.

Early Wednesday morning, all eastbound lanes on Highway 401 between Oxford Road 29 and Cedar Creek Road were closed due to a three-vehicle collision that happened the night before.

On Tuesday evening around 7:30 p. m., Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported they responded to an accident involving a transport truck, an SUV, and a pick-up truck.

By 9 p. m., OPP were still helping stranded drivers off the highway using emergency turnarounds, keeping all eastbound lanes shut down until about 5:45 a. m. Wednesday.

The details regarding injuries from the crash are still unclear as of Wednesday morning.

The just over 10-hour closure serves as a reminder for drivers to be ready when traveling in tough weather conditions, according to officials.

“We’re asking people if you need to head out, make sure you have a full tank of gas, make sure you pack an emergency preparedness kit because you just never know if you’ll get stuck on the highway because of a crash or you’re involved in an incident yourself,” said Sergeant Ed Sanchuk with West Region OPP.

“Warm clothing, making sure you have medication, water, food, matches, a candle, and a charged cellphone … if you can stay home, please do so.”

Sanchuk added that OPP dealt with multiple collisions throughout Tuesday night and are urging everyone to adapt to the weather conditions.

Even though the weather alert for freezing rain was lifted Wednesday morning, there was still a yellow warning for snowfall in effect.

Environment Canada is predicting heavy snow will continue throughout the day with more than 20 cm possible by Wednesday afternoon.
