A community backlash is anticipated Monday evening regarding a proposed townhouse project on Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering’s Nautical Village neighborhood. Residents are worried about issues like density, design, and the impact on traffic.
Over two dozen locals attended an open house in March, and many of them are expected to express their concerns again on Monday night. This comes after Liverpool Road Limited Partnership increased the number of units from 51 to 91 in their new proposal.
The updated plan includes 60 stacked units along Annland Road, Liverpool Road, and Wharf Street, along with two central blocks of back-to-back townhouses and a three-storey mixed-use building.
The site is currently mainly used for marine storage but previously housed a structure built in 1850 known as Avis House, which was taken down by the applicant in 2023.
Residents have raised worries that the waterfront area is already crowded, especially during the summer months. This has led to problems with traffic, parking, and litter. There are fears that the new development will only add to these existing challenges.
Pickering Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner commented that the proposal is “way too dense” for this area and feels “out of character” for the neighborhood.
