THUNDER BAY, Ontario, Canada – The Duluth Huskies managed to play only six innings due to the rain in Thunder Bay but made those innings count, beating the local Border Cats 11-6 in a shortened Northwoods League matchup on Sunday.

Duluth racked up nine of its 11 runs during the first two innings, largely thanks to first baseman and power hitter Jalen Smith. He kicked off the scoring with a three-run homer in the first inning and did it again in his next at-bat during the second inning. Following Smith’s second home run, Blake Eckerle hit an RBI double and Anthony Cepeda contributed with a two-run single, putting the Huskies ahead 9-5 after just two frames.

In the fifth inning, Smith drew a walk with the bases loaded for his seventh RBI of the game, which would end up being all they needed as heavy rains fell after the sixth inning and prevented any restart.

George Mc Intyre had a solid performance going 3-for-4 with a double while leading off for his team. Anthony Cepeda also joined Smith by recording two hits.

Cal Cooper picked up the win on the mound by throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief and striking out four batters.

Duluth (12-16) will be back home for five of its next six games, starting with a Monday night matchup against Eau Claire at Wade Stadium.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
