Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report that a sixth individual has died in the hospital following a tragic two-vehicle accident that took place in Mapleton, Ont. last week.
In a press release issued on Friday, OPP confirmed the passing of a 42-year-old man from Brampton who was driving an SUV and was its only occupant during the collision with a passenger van on June 12.
The van had ten occupants at the time of the accident, which included five children who were sadly declared dead at the scene. The remaining five passengers suffered injuries ranging from serious to minor, according to police.
The four girls and one boy who lost their lives were part of a family from Elmira and were aged 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 years old.
A funeral service for the children was planned for Saturday afternoon.
Authorities are still investigating what led up to this devastating crash and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
A Go Fund Me page has been created for Peter and Elizabeth Bartsch – a couple involved in the van but not related to the five Elmira children.
An additional Go Fund Me has been established for the Doerksen family, who are related to the five deceased children.
