Oxford County OPP report that a tow truck operator from Kitchener was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Highway 401, just west of Ayr.

The collision occurred at 7:18 a. m. on Wednesday, prompting calls to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) about the accident in the westbound lanes near Oxford Road 3.

According to OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk, the victim was a tow truck driver who had pulled over to assist a motorist stranded on the roadside. This driver has been identified as a 42-year-old man from Kitchener.

He was declared dead at the scene.

“To all family members and friends that are affected by this tragedy, I just want to extend my deepest and sincerest condolences,” said Sanchuk.

The OPP also mentioned they have identified a vehicle of interest related to their investigation. It is described as a commercial motor vehicle featuring a blue cab and trailer topped with a black tarp.

Oxford OPP constable, Matt Foster, told 570 News Radio, “This is a devastating example of why (the ‘move over’ law) exists. It is meant to protect tow truck operators, first responders, people who come out to the 401 to help others.”

If anyone has information regarding this tragic collision or can identify the vehicle or its driver, they are urged to reach out to Oxford County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were shut down for several hours on Wednesday from Cedar Creek Road up until Oxford Road 29 near Drumbo but were reopened around 1:30 p. m.
