Environment Canada has issued a red tornado warning for areas north of Cornwall, Ont., affecting communities like Maxville and Alexandria.

This is a breaking news story. A previous version of the story is below.

Environment Canada has put out a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for much of eastern Ontario and western Quebec on Thursday, indicating that tornadoes may form starting late in the morning.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Cornwall and surrounding areas to its north and west, including Winchester, Maxville, and Alexandria.

The watch extends from Belleville to Ingleside and up to Hawkesbury, but it does not include Ottawa – the watch for Ottawa-Gatineau was lifted around 1:40 p. m.

A separate yellow severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued for communities in western Quebec that are north and east of Gatineau, such as Val-des-Monts, Thurso, and Montebello, suggesting that similar storms could occur in the afternoon and evening.

Yellow alerts are at the lowest level on Environment Canada’s three-colour scale.

A watch indicates that significant weather may happen soon while a warning means it’s currently happening or about to start. Tornado watches or warnings will be issued if there’s an increased chance of them occurring.

The Kingston-Belleville area might experience storm surges along shorelines from Thursday evening until Saturday morning due to high winds as noted by local conservation authorities.

No alerts are currently active in other regions like Maniwaki and Pembroke.

Rainfall warnings have ended by early Thursday afternoon for most areas except Tweed; Grenville-sur-la-Rouge had one earlier on.
