London police have charged one individual and are searching for another after two suspects attempted to carry out a fake arrest in the eastern part of the city.

On June 2 at around 1:30 p. m., the suspects reportedly approached a male victim outside his residence on River Road, according to police. One suspect claimed he was a police officer and informed the victim that he was under arrest.

The victim questioned the suspects, who arrived in a grey Jeep SUV dressed casually. Doubting their claims, he ran to a nearby business seeking assistance. One of the suspects then forced entry into his home, and shortly after, both escaped in the vehicle.

“The London Police Service reminds the public that police officers are issued with a badge and warrant card bearing their photograph, name, rank and identification number,” police said.

“Officers in plainclothes are prepared to produce their identification; anyone who is unsure about the legitimacy of an interaction should ask to see the badge and warrant card and, when in doubt, contact police immediately.”

The victim did not sustain any injuries.

One suspect was seen wearing a disposable-style facemask, according to police.

Investigators managed to identify one suspect and arrested a 33-year-old man from Grand Bend without incident at a residence on Ashley Crescent while also seizing the grey Jeep SUV. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 8.

The search continues for a second suspect described as a Black man, approximately 6’4″, wearing a black hoodie and black pants.

The investigation is ongoing, police stated. They urge anyone with information or surveillance footage from the River Road area on June 2 between 1 p. m. and 2 p. m. to come forward.
