A manufacturing growth in Harrow is set to generate jobs and bring more production back to Ontario, as the province aims to boost local supply chains.

The Ontario government reports that Ener Quest Technologies Solutions Inc., a custom manufacturer of prefabricated electrical equipment, is investing nearly $16 million to expand its Essex County facility, with $1.5 million in assistance from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund.

The province mentions that this project will create 125 new jobs and help secure 154 existing positions.

This expansion will transfer more switchgear production from its U. S.-based sister facility to Harrow, enabling the company to enhance capacity and lessen reliance on cross-border operations.

“Ener Quest’s expansion speaks not only to the resilience of Ontario’s manufacturing sector, but to the reliability of our workforce and the power of partnership,” said Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli.

Essex MPP Anthony Leardi states that this investment comes during a time of economic uncertainty.

“We need to invest in Ontario. We need to protect Ontario jobs,” said Leardi, referring to ongoing economic challenges.

Tom Fortushnik, general manager at Ener Quest Technologies, notes they expect to hire “more than 100” workers as part of this growth initiative.

This project could mean new job opportunities for residents soon, with hiring expected to start later this year.

<p“ We’ll start that process somewhere in summer, maybe in the June time frame through October,” he stated.

Fortushnik mentioned that the expansion will cover various roles including assembly positions along with engineering and maintenance jobs. He also pointed out other roles such as “security for the people that already exist within those four walls” and “looking at indirect people to support that, whether it’s in quality or in supervision.”

He added that this project is also likely beneficial for local businesses they collaborate with.

WATCH | How tariffs will impact Ontario’s manufacturing industry:

How tariffs will impact Ontario’s manufacturing industryDennis Darby, president of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, talks about what actions provincial and federal governments should take to support Ontario manufacturers amid a U. S.-Canada trade war.

“They’re extremely excited because of the local community that already supports us,” he said regarding contractors and suppliers within the region.

Fortushnik believes moving more production back to Ontario matters both for their company and for the overall economy.

“The investment in this community is so important to Ontario as well as the community,” he explained.

The province claims that this expansion will help position Ener Quest better meet demand across sectors such as data centres, modular housing and medical infrastructure.
