A diver has died in Erieau, its harbourmaster says.
Ryan Demeurichy informed of the death on Thursday.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service told reporters in an email Thursday that it is taking the lead in what it called “the Erieau incident” but did not comment when asked about the death.
“We are currently in communication with the family and [are] diligently working to gather all necessary information for an update,” Sgt. Lynette Rosina said in the email.
“We will provide an update on the situation [Friday] morning.”
Chatham-Kent police issued a notice earlier Thursday asking people to avoid the area of Mariner’s Road due to an ongoing investigation and a significant emergency response in the area.
Chatham-Kent Fire Rescue, Ontario Provincial Police and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent have all referred inquiries to Chatham-Kent Police Service.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development told CBC in an email Thursday that it was notified of an incident in Erieau.
“A ministry inspector attended the scene and issued one health and safety requirement to Express Roadside Recovery Inc.,” the email said.
The ministry did not explain how the company was related to the incident, and the company did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday.
