The wildfires raging in northwestern Ontario have cast eerie hues across the skies of Durham Region, leading to disruptions in outdoor activities even far away from where they started.
Smoke drifting from these wildfires has caused hazy conditions throughout southern Ontario on Wednesday. Environment Canada is advising residents to limit outdoor exposure and be aware of symptoms such as irritation in the eyes, nose, or throat, headaches, or a mild cough. More severe but less frequent symptoms can include wheezing, chest pain, or a strong cough.
To ensure the safety of participants and staff given the poor air quality, outdoor recreation programs in Clarington, like Families in the Park and drop-in swimming at Orono Park pool, have been cancelled today.
Clarington Camps will continue with indoor programming.
Staff members who need to work outside have been given personal protective equipment to help minimize their exposure to harmful particles found in wildfire smoke.
Whitby’s playground programs are also cancelled due to the air quality warning issued for Wednesday.
Affected by these conditions too, Ajax has adjusted its recreation and culture programs for July 15. The outdoor Ajax Memorial Pool closed at 11:30 a. m., and all playground locations have been cancelled because of the poor air quality situation.
All three community centers are open and available as cool spots for residents during normal operating hours.
Oshawa, Pickering, and Whitby have enforced an immediate fire ban due to ongoing high temperatures to ensure community safety. All permits for open-air burning are suspended until further notice, and no new permits will be granted until this ban is lifted.
