The province is commending three Whitby firefighters for risking their lives to avoid wasting somebody.

The Ontario Medal for Firefighter Bravery is the province’s highest honour, awarded to firefighters who’ve risked their lives to avoid wasting and defend others.

“The recipients of the Police and Firefighter Bravery Medals each put their own lives at risk when others were in danger,” mentioned the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. “Their tireless vigilance, and their remarkable selflessness and courage, make them an inspiration to their colleagues and to the community members they help to keep safe.”

Captain Christopher Curry, Firefighter Terry Williams and Firefighter Adonis Perez of Whitby Hearth and Emergency Companies all obtained the award.

In August of 2024, Whitby Hearth and Emergency Companies responded to a home hearth with stories of an individual trapped on the second flooring.

Captain Christopher Curry and Firefighters Terry Williams and Adonis Perez encountered intense flames, heavy smoke and worsening circumstances.

Advancing with a hearth hose, they extinguished a number of fires whereas trying to find the occupant.

They pressured open a blocked door and located the unresponsive sufferer in a bed room. Out of the blue, the ceiling collapsed on the crew.

Regardless of their coaching that requires retreat, they pushed ahead, cleared particles and created a path to hold the occupant to security.

“Ontario’s firefighters and police officers never hesitate to put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe,” mentioned Solicitor Normal Michael Kerzner. “Those we are honouring today have demonstrated great courage in risking their lives to save others. They went above and beyond the call of duty, and their actions play a vital role in protecting Ontario. I thank them for their dedication and extraordinary heroism.”
