Whitby council has decided to engage in training focused on diversity, equity, and anti-racism following an inquiry into claims of anti-Asian racism. This action comes after a meeting on Oct. 7, 2024, where Councillor Chris Leahy claimed that Councillor Steve Yamada faced racial microaggressions during his tenure as deputy mayor. According to a report from the law firm hired by the town to look into these matters, the allegations were deemed “unsubstantiated” based on a balance of probabilities. It concluded that Yamada was treated differently due to political disagreements and tensions rather than racial bias. Nevertheless, it recommended that the council enhance its strategy for tackling discrimination and bias. The council will also review the law firm’s suggestion to update its Code of Conduct to incorporate language addressing discrimination in a future meeting.
