WHITBY – Authorities report that a coyote bit a two-year-old boy in the face during an unprovoked incident at a playground in Whitby, Ont., on Sunday evening.
Durham Region police stated that they received a call to help an ambulance at Vanier Park around 8:30 p. m. after a coyote wandered into the playground and attacked the child before bystanders and his guardian were able to scare it away.
Shortly after, officers discovered another coyote in distress nearby and removed it without any injuries reported.
In separate incidents, three other children were injured due to coyote attacks that occurred in Whitby and Markham in May and June.
Officials noted that while aggressive behavior from coyotes is rare, they are taking it seriously. They advise residents to stay alert near parks and trails, particularly during dawn and dusk.
Residents should keep their pets leashed, supervise their kids, eliminate food sources that might attract wildlife, and report any sightings using Whitby’s online tracking tool or call 911 if a coyote poses an immediate danger.
