Here’s what you can expect to be open and closed:

What’s available on Canada Day:

Pickering Town Centre will be shut down, but its stand-alone restaurants (with patios) like Moxies, Jack Astor’s, Pickle Barrel and East Side Mario’s will remain open. Stores at Oshawa Centre will also be closed; however, restaurants with street-facing entrances (and patios), such as Baxter’s Landing, Kelsey’s and The Keg will be welcoming customers. Most Beer Stores will not operate; still, four locations will stay open from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m. Pickering Casino, Ajax Casino and Great Blue Heron in Scugog Most cannabis shops Many craft breweries like Town Brewery in Whitby and Old Flame in Port Perry are likely to be open. Some may have shorter hours; so it’s a good idea to check if your favorite brewery is operating. Lakeview Park Beach in Oshawa will welcome visitors (lifeguards on duty), along with most other public beaches. The outdoor pool at Camp Samac in Oshawa as well as the Ajax Memorial outdoor pool and Orono Park pool will also be accessible. Parks and most splash pads should be ready for use too. A few recreation complexes including Delpark Homes Centre in Oshawa and Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle are set to stay open with modified hours.

Transit and municipal/regional services

GO Trains along with DRT and Pulse buses will run on a holiday/weekend schedule. Waste collection including recycling has a delayed holiday schedule meaning garbage pickup for blue box and green bin services is moved forward by one day. Municipal offices won’t be operating.

Fireworks

You can enjoy sanctioned fireworks displays at Oshawa (Lakeview Park); Ajax Fairgrounds; Pickering (Kinsmen Park); Port Perry (Palmer Park), Whitby (Victoria Fields), Uxbridge (Elgin Park) and Bowmanville (Garnett Rickard Recreation Complex).

Residents are allowed to buy fireworks for private celebrations within each municipality since Canada Day is one of the few occasions when permits aren’t necessary.
