Canada Day 2025 Plans for Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, and More

This year, Canada Day in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington and Durham Region is on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

Here’s what to expect for open and closed places:

What’s open on Canada Day:

Pickering Town Centre will be closed, but its stand-alone restaurants (with patios), like Moxies, Jack Astor’s, Pickle Barrel and East Side Mario’s, will be open. Oshawa Centre stores will also be shut down, but restaurants with street-facing entrances (and patios), such as Baxter’s Landing, Kelsey’s and The Keg, will welcome guests. Most Beer Stores won’t operate as usual; however, four locations will stay open from 11 a. m. to 6 p. m. Ajax 75 Kingston Rd E Oshawa 200 Ritson Rd N Pickering 1355 Kingston Road Whitby 3950 Brock St. N Wine Rack in the Independent Grocery outlet at 1893 Scugog Street in Port Perry will be available. The Independent Grocery store will also be open from 8 a. m. to 6 p. m. Shopper’s Drug Mart locations are set to operate. Most other drugstores should also be accessible. Many restaurants that typically operate during holidays will be open-especially those with patio dining-but it’s best to call ahead just in case. Pickering Casino, Ajax Casino and Great Blue Heron in Scugog) Most cannabis dispensaries Several craft breweries will have their doors open too-like Town Brewery in Whitby and Old Flame in Port Perry. Some might reduce their hours; it’s wise to call your preferred brewery first. Lakeview Park Beach in Oshawa will welcome visitors (lifeguards on duty), along with most other public beaches. Camp Samac outdoor pool in Oshawa is set to open as well as Ajax Memorial outdoor pool and Orono Park pool. Parks and most splash pads are ready for use. Some recreation complexes like Delpark Homes Centre in Oshawa and Diane Hamre Recreation Complex in Newcastle will run on modified hours.

What’s closed on Canada Day

LCBO outlets Canada Post Walmart stores Most grocery stores won’t be operating Mid-Town Mall in Oshawa and Whitby Mall will not be available

Transit and municipal/regional services

GO Trains along with DRT and Pulse buses are running according to a holiday/weekend schedule. Waste collection including recycling follows a delayed holiday schedule; garbage pickup plus blue box and green bin services are moved ahead by one day. Municipal offices aren’t going to be open.

Fireworks

You can catch sanctioned fireworks displays at several locations: Oshawa (Lakeview Park); Ajax Downs; Pickering (Kinsmen Park); Port Perry (Palmer Park); Whitby (Victoria Fields); Uxbridge (Elgin Park) and Bowmanville (Garnett Rickard Recreation Complex).

Residents can buy fireworks for personal celebrations across each municipality. On Canada Day specifically permits aren’t needed.
