WHITBY, Ontario, January 23, 2026

Firefighters are more than just key figures in our communities; they represent bravery and commitment, working tirelessly to keep everyone safe, often putting their own lives on the line. As first responders to fires and major incidents, their job is both risky and vital. Their incredible dedication to helping others truly deserves recognition and respect.

Today, Ryan Turnbull, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and National Revenue and to the Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions) and Member of Parliament (Whitby), announced a grant of $135,000 for the Fallen Firefighters Memorial and 175th Celebration project in Whitby. He shared this news on behalf of the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages.

This funding will help create a monument to honor the 175th anniversary of Whitby Fire & Emergency Services, which started in 1851. The monument will showcase a bronze sculpture depicting a kneeling firefighter in front of a wall that will bear the names of Whitby’s fallen firefighters. The project also includes building four interpretive panels in English and French containing information and images about the history of Whitby Fire & Emergency Services, as well as seating areas, landscaping, and lighting.

This funding comes from the Legacy Fund component of Canadian Heritage’s Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program. The Legacy Fund specifically supports capital projects related to honoring significant local historical events or figures. This financial support will cover important aspects of this project such as design and planning, installation, excavation, materials, labor, and lighting.
