Several Canada geese discovered dead in Whitby Harbour last week are likely victims of bird flu, according to initial findings from the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC).
Brian Stevens, a wildlife pathologist with CWHC’s Ontario/Nunavut Region, confirmed the early results Tuesday evening. The samples will need to be sent to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for confirmation.
Residents in the Whitby area are being advised to steer clear of any goose remains and ensure pets stay on leashes so they don’t consume any dead wildlife.
If anyone spots a sick or deceased bird in Whitby, they should contact Animal Services at 905-655-0283 and provide the location details.
Last week, the City of Brampton also reported receiving notifications about several dead waterfowl at Professor’s Lake and Reginald Conover Pond, located around Mc Vean Drive and Cottrelle Boulevard. The city suspects that these waterfowl may have been infected with avian influenza.
