A 38-year-old woman has died after a serious accident that shut down a major section of the expressway in Kitchener on Monday morning.
As reported by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the southbound ramp from Highway 7 West to the eastbound lanes of Highway 8 is closed following the incident, which occurred around 7:30 a. m.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt with the OPP stated that the Waterloo resident lost control of her vehicle on the ramp, went up a snow embankment, and flew over the concrete barrier, landing on the highway below. She was declared dead at the scene.
Schmidt mentioned that this is the second vehicle to fall from that ramp onto the highway this morning.
In an afternoon update posted on social media, Schmidt noted that the flyover ramp leading to Highway 8 will remain closed until contractors from the Ministry of Transportation can clear away the hazardous embankment.
He explained that snow pushed onto the shoulder created a raised surface where vehicles could slide over and go off into traffic below.
“Plows are coming through, clearing the highways and pushing that show off to the side. In this case, they can’t push it over the wall because it would go down onto the highway below,” said Schmidt.
He indicated that it’s expected for this flyover ramp to stay closed for most of today and possibly into Monday evening, which may disrupt afternoon commutes.
According to Schmidt, road conditions are believed to have played a role in Monday morning’s crashes.
