It’s been almost a year and a half since the Ontario Ministry of Sport announced that Waterloo Region would host the 2026 Ontario Summer Games. Finally, this week, over 4000 athletes from various sports, aged between 12 and 18, will compete in four days of events from July 30 to August 2, 2026.

The games have been held since 1973 when Oshawa was the first host city. Now it’s Waterloo Region’s turn to shine, with Wilfrid Laurier University serving as the initial venue for welcoming athletes and over 600 coaches and trainers to the area for this exciting event.
The opening ceremony is set for Thursday from 6:30 p. m. to 8:30 p. m. at Wilfrid Laurier’s University Stadium. This ceremony will bring together around 4200 athletes to celebrate their hard work before the competitions begin. Organizers plan to include an athlete parade, an athlete oath, and a concert featuring DJ Z-Spinz.

The area surrounding the stadium will also host the Fan Fest for the Ontario Summer Games starting at 3:30 p. m., where attendees can enjoy local vendors, entertainment, and various sponsorship activities.
Tickets are required for entry into the opening ceremony and are available for $12 for adults; children under two can attend free of charge. Seating at University Stadium is on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find tickets for the opening ceremony here.
The games will feature a total of 24 different sports taking place across 19 venues throughout Waterloo Region. The sports included in these games are:
