The Dean of Engineering at the University of Waterloo, along with hockey figure Don Cherry and tech leader Edward Rogers, is among 30 new recipients of the Order of Ontario.

Lt.-Gov. Edith Dumont has revealed the 2025 appointments, which also include trade union chief Joe Mancinelli from the Labourers’ International Union of North America and former U. S. ambassador David Mac Naughton.

Dumont stated that the appointees have made a “profound contribution” to Ontarians’ lives and exemplify the best in the province.

Mary Wells, a well-known figure in the Waterloo Region community, is recognized for her work in sustainable manufacturing and has impacted aerospace and automotive sectors globally.

She’s a “champion for equity” in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. She co-founded programs aimed at increasing female enrollment at the university.

Appointments are based on recommendations from an independent advisory board.

Since its inception in 1986, over 900 individuals have received appointments to the Order of Ontario.

The recipients come from various fields including business, academia, culture, and law. This includes former Ontario chief justice George Strathy and Toronto International Film Festival CEO Cameron Bailey.
