CCTV cameras equipped with automated licence plate recognition technology will be installed on provincial highways in the Waterloo region to help prevent and investigate local crimes.

Ontario’s Solicitor General Michael Kerzner visited the headquarters of the Waterloo Regional Police Service on Wednesday to share this news, announcing that the province is providing $100,000 in initial funding for the project.

“When we have public safety that’s strong, everything revolves around it. People invest in communities, entrepreneurs come to communities like Waterloo region, which was the home of so many innovations over the years,” Kerzner said.

“New subdivisions are built, schools are built, hospitals are built. People will come here because the region is safe.”

The specific number of cameras and their locations haven’t been finalized yet.

The new cameras will integrate with the existing CCTV system managed by the police service, which already has cameras set up across the area.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service announced Wednesday it is collaborating with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation to implement automated licence plate recognition technology on provincial highways throughout the region. Solicitor General Michael Kerzner made this announcement at police headquarters alongside police Chief Mark Crowell and Deputy Chief Jen Davis.

The police service reported that between January 1 and September 11 of this year, their in-cruiser automated licence plate recognition system notified officers about 7,749 licence plates that were relevant for investigation.

This included stolen plates, those belonging to wanted individuals, and helped identify vehicles involved in ongoing criminal investigations.

This system assisted in recovering 75 vehicles and resulted in 94 arrests along with 77 charges being laid, according to the police service.

The police department mentioned that they consulted with Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner and completed a privacy impact assessment before deploying these cameras in the area.

Police Chief Mark Crowell stated that these new cameras will aid officers in catching more criminals and solving more cases.

“It has probably been the most monumental technological change I’ve seen in my career, where officers have the capability within their cruisers to have that licence plate reader technology available,” Crowell said.

“What we are doing is putting together a network of very sophisticated technology that’s allowing us to solve crime, to prevent crime, and hopefully to deter it moving forward.”
