Construction has officially started on Wasaga Beach’s first high school and community hub, bringing local students closer to attending high school right in their own neighborhood.
Officials from the Town of Wasaga Beach, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, Province of Ontario, and community partners came together to mark the official groundbreaking of the new campus at 486 River Road West.
“Today is about action, partnership, and results for Wasaga Beach families,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “Council knew our kids deserved access to high school here at home, and we took a different approach to help make that happen. By working directly with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board and the Province of Ontario, we helped advance a smarter, more practical proposal that gets shovels in the ground and doors open sooner. This project is a powerful example of what can be achieved when municipal, provincial, education, and private-sector partners work together to put students and families first.”
The project shows a proactive approach led by Town Council in collaboration with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. Instead of waiting for a typical school project to progress on its own, the Town and school board worked on a practical proposal that utilizes existing municipal infrastructure next to the Wasaga Stars Arena and Wasaga Beach Public Library.
This strategy helped secure provincial funding for the Town’s first high school more quickly. For local students and families, this means less time commuting out of town by bus, more time in class, and greater opportunities to engage in sports, arts, clubs, and extracurricular activities within their own community. The new campus will provide local students with chances to learn, compete, and build school life where they live.
The high school has been designed as a K-12 facility. It will offer 1,008 student spaces along with 49 licensed childcare spaces; it also includes a 300-seat community theatre, track-and-field facilities, shared learning areas, as well as opportunities for post-secondary education through partnerships with Canadore College and Lakehead University.
The project benefits from an overall investment of $70.1 million-comprising $67.3 million in provincial funding alongside a $2.8 million contribution from the Town of Wasaga Beach for theatre enhancements aimed at broadening opportunities for both students and residents. The School and Community Hub was also made possible thanks to a generous land donation from Far Sight Homes.
This is one of Ontario’s most significant education and community infrastructure projects currently underway.
“This project is about making the smartest possible use of public infrastructure,” said Andrew Mc Neill, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Wasaga Beach. “By integrating the school with existing municipal facilities and shared community amenities we’re maximizing value for taxpayers while minimizing duplication; ensuring public spaces are utilized effectively is key here. It’s an innovative model showing how fast-growing communities can deliver essential services more quickly.”
“This project reimagines what a school can be,” said Kimberly Dixon, Director of Education at Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. “Together with the Town of Wasaga Beach we’ve created a model that blends education with childcare services recreational activities culture as well as lifelong learning into one community hub. This creative partnership will benefit students along with families living in Wasaga Beach while providing insights into how other growing communities across Ontario may tackle future educational developments.”
Construction is now underway; it’s expected that this new school alongside its community hub will welcome its first group of students along with community users come September 2028.
