York University has revealed a new sign at the location of its upcoming School of Medicine building next to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct.
The University has also established a new partnership with the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI) aimed at promoting health-care innovation through collaboration with partners within the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct.
York’s new School of Medicine, which will be Canada’s first medical school focused on community-based primary health-care education, is set to open in September 2028. The school aims to train future primary-care doctors who will address the pressing primary health-care needs of underserved communities, including those in northern Toronto, York Region, Simcoe County, the District of Muskoka and nearby rural areas.

The Ontario government has allocated $9 million in initial funding for York’s new School of Medicine as part of its 2024 budget. It also committed to supporting 80 undergraduate spots and 102 postgraduate spots in the first year, with plans to increase that to 240 undergraduate seats and 293 postgraduate seats annually once fully operational.
This initiative is part of a broader plan by the province to implement the largest expansion of medical education in over a decade as it works toward strengthening its health-care system. The York University School of Medicine builds on previous investments made by the Ontario government in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct through Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital and a newly planned long-term care home adjacent to the hospital, which will provide an additional 256 care beds for an aging population.
The City of Vaughan has provided land for the new School of Medicine building within the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct. This precinct represents a city-led effort to create a world-class hub for healthcare excellence and innovation on an 82-acre site that currently houses Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital.
“Today, I was delighted to be a part of revealing the new sign to mark the site of the future York University School of Medicine in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct. This represents another milestone in realizing our ambitious vision of becoming a leading destination for health-care excellence and innovation,” says City of Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca. “I would like to thank our partners at York University and Mackenzie Health for their work in advancing this project.”
Medical students will gain experience with community-based health care by training directly within communities, ensuring they understand Ontarians’ diverse needs. As these needs evolve, graduates from York will be prepared to adapt while continuing their focus on improving community and population health.
This preparation means they’ll leave school equipped with skills needed to thrive within interprofessional teams and will be ready to follow patients across various care settings while utilizing digital health technologies effectively.
In addition to recent collaborations with Oak Valley Health and Southlake Regional Health Centre, this new School of Medicine is creating more opportunities for partnerships focused on research and innovation involving York University, Mackenzie Health, and venture Lab as part of what’s happening at Vaughn Healthcare Centre Precinct.
“The Vaughan Healthcare Precinct anchors this vision by building a pathway for homegrown companies to bring their innovations from lab to hospital and market unlocking their ability to transform patient care, improve lives, and promote a resilient healthy economy for generations,” said Raed Kadri, vice-president Strategic Initiatives Business Development Head OVIN Ontario Centre Innovation.
