The province’s police watchdog is looking into a serious crash that happened overnight on Highway 400 northbound near Rutherford Road in Vaughan, which resulted in a driver fleeing the scene on foot.
The accident took place just north of Langstaff Road around midnight and involved three vehicles.
According to OPP, a suspected impaired driver in a cargo van rear-ended a minivan, causing it to hit a third vehicle driven by an off-duty York Regional Police officer.
The cargo van driver got out after the crash and tried to escape but was caught shortly afterward in a nearby restaurant parking lot. He was arrested for impaired driving and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Two other individuals were also sent to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
The northbound lanes of Highway 400 were closed at Bass Pro Mills Drive for several hours but reopened just before 9:30 a. m. on Thursday.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has activated its mandate and will handle the investigation.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents where people are seriously injured or die. They also look into cases where sexual assault is alleged or firearms are discharged at individuals.
