Ontario Premier Doug Ford praised a homeowner who shot and wounded an alleged burglar in Vaughan, Ont., this week, stating that intruders “need to be shot.”

“Congratulations for shooting this guy – should have shot him a couple more times as far as I’m concerned,” Ford remarked when asked about the incident during an unrelated news conference on Wednesday.

Ford continued his remarks by criticizing the federal government for “going after legal, law-abiding gun owners,” as well as “weak-kneed judges” who release offenders on bail. Police report that the suspect was on probation at the time of the incident.

“They always want to protect the bad guys, the judges always want to protect the Charter rights – how about the charter of rights of the people, to keep them safe rather than always protecting these criminals,” Ford stated. “I’m just sick and tired of it.”

Opposition NDP Leader Marit Stiles described Ford’s comments as “very irresponsible nonsense” while speaking with reporters Wednesday morning.

“This premier has been premier of this province for eight long years now,” she noted. “If people in Ontario feel less safe today, then that’s on him as the premier of this province.”

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner shared similar views in a statement to .

“It is irresponsible for the Premier to be making comments encouraging violence or celebrating loss of life,” he said. “He should focus on investing in measures that will make our province safer and empower first responders to do their jobs to serve and protect our communities.”

York Regional Police mentioned earlier this week that no charges would be filed against the resident who used a legally owned and properly stored firearm during the encounter.

The investigation revealed that officers responded just before 1 a. m. Tuesday following reports of a shooting at a residence located near Carrville Woods Circle and Crimson Forest Drive, close to Rutherford Road and Dufferin Street.

Multiple suspects were allegedly armed with at least one firearm when they forced entry into the home. The suspects were later seen getting into a black pickup truck and fleeing.

A middle-aged man and an elderly woman were present at home during the event, according to police, and no residents sustained injuries.

The police released video footage related to the case on Tuesday showing masked individuals entering and exiting the property. Rapid gunfire could be heard as they fled from the house toward their vehicle.

The investigators later found out that after being shot, one man had been taken to a hospital in Toronto shortly after what happened.

Man facing multiple charges

In a news release issued Wednesday, authorities stated that a 24-year-old man without a fixed address is now facing charges including robbery with a firearm and disguise with intent.

This individual was also charged for violating probation conditions. He is currently in stable condition at a hospital while remaining under police custody based on information from their release.

The accused has previous encounters with law enforcement and was wanted by several agencies for “numerous violent offenses.”

Court records reviewed by indicate that he previously led police on a high-speed chase through Mississauga on July 24, 2020, while driving a stolen truck containing its owner’s eight-year-old daughter inside.

Earlier that day he along with another person had robbed a pharmacy demanding cash and drugs before fleeing in another stolen vehicle tracked down by police into an underground parking garage according to court documents.

The man then attempted another escape from police by carjacking another vehicle; although some children managed to exit safely along with their parent, his eight-year-old daughter remained inside during his reckless actions.

Later it was revealed he didn’t know she was there while leading authorities on high-speed chases going between 100-120 km/h through busy streets in downtown Mississauga during peak hours according judge’s sentencing decision statements.

Court records show after realizing she was still inside; he finally stopped letting her out onto sidewalk before abandoning both car afterwards running away ultimately turning himself three months later thereafter.

A jury subsequently convicted him due connection involving carjacking alongside dangerous driving behavior amongst various other criminal activities including robbery involving pharmacy instance.

Lucky enough , however ; He received not guilty verdict concerning kidnapping charge put forth against him.
